چکیده

We compared GRAPPA parallel MRI (pMRI) to regular MRI (non-GRAPPA) for BOLD fMRI while keeping all other parameters fixed. We acquired both GRAPPA and non-GRAPPA images using a high resolution as well as a low resolution EPI matrix. We found significantly larger values of percent BOLD signal when comparing higher resolution acquisitions to lower resolution ones, independently of whether data were acquired with GRAPPA EPI or with regular EPI. We also demonstrated no loss of functional activation or BOLD signal when comparing GRAPPA to non-GRAPPA while keeping the same spatial resolution. We propose to use pMRI to gain the ability to perform whole-brain acquisition at higher spatial resolution with TE in the 30-40 ms range for optimal BOLD detection at 3T, or at faster scan times. To this end, we conclude that GRAPPA pMRI is advantageous for BOLD fMRI and whole-brain EPI acquisition at high spa-

Evaluation of 2D multiband EPI imaging for high-resolution, whole-brain, task-based fMRI studies at 3T: Sensitivity and slice leakage artifacts

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies that require high-resolution whole-brain coverage have long scan times that are primarily driven by the large number of thin slices acquired. Two-dimensional multiband echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequences accelerate the data acquisition along the slice direction and therefore represent an attractive approach to such studies by improving the te...

Effect of Phase-Encoding Reduction on Geometric Distortion and BOLD Signal Changes in fMRI

Introduction Echo-planar imaging (EPI) is a group of fast data acquisition methods commonly used in fMRI studies. It acquires multiple image lines in k-space after a single excitation, which leads to a very short scan time. A well-known problem with EPI is that it is more sensitive to distortions due to the used encoding scheme. Source of distortion is inhomogeneity in the static B0 field that ...

Studies of BOLD Signal Characteristics Using A Modified HASTE Sequence with GRAPPA

Introduction: Echo planar imaging (EPI) is widely used in fMRI due to its high sensitivity to T2* contrast and high temporal resolution to capture the BOLD response. However, susceptibility variations and eddy currents can result in signal voids, image distortion and ghosting, limiting EPI’s applicability in some brain regions. Additionally, T2* changes in the down stream of veins can lead to p...

Evaluation of Sensory Pathways in Spinal Cord by Comparison of fMRI Methodologies

Introduction: Today, clinicians and neuroscientists need to have a comprehensive survey of neurological pathologies and injuries. For the First-time, SEEP contrast and Spin-Echo pulse sequences was used for functional imaging of the Lumbar spinal cord. This method used by several research groups for Spinal cord mapping, but other researchers tried to improve BOLD fMRI to Spina...
